Animal Protection Society of Durham: what do users think?
Kalynn Naglieri: I'm VERY disappointed with this shelter. I found 2 huskies about a week ago or so that I think had been abandoned. I wish I could have kept them but I already have a reactive bad dog, 2 cats, live in a small apartment and am moving to Florida so I had called animal control to come pick them up. They were the SWEETEST dogs and very friendly. You could tell the male/female pair were bonded to each other.I posted on multiple FB groups about the lost dogs and where to adopt them if any one was interested. It seems like this shelter didn't do everything they could have to find the owners as I never saw them listed on the website in the lost/found section. My husband called the shelter a few times to keep tabs and see if the owners were found.TODAY at 12:30pm I got a call asking if we wanted to adopt or foster the dogs because they were scheduled to be euthanized at 3pm today. The reason: "did pass the behavior test and are aggressive so they can't be adopted by the general public." I explained to them I find that really hard to believe because they were so sweet to a complete stranger when I found them and that it might just be the fact of the environment they are currently in and are afraid because they are separated. The fact that they called me only 2.5 hours before being euthanized and put me in a position to try to help these dogs while I'm at work is ridiculous, especially since we have called to keep tabs on the dogs.As an animal lover, I have been trying to find these dogs homes since I found them and now I am very sad and feel at blame for the fact these beautiful animals are going to be put down. I wish AC gave me an option on what shelter to take them too.If they had known that these dogs didn't "pass the test" they should have let me know well in advance so I could of had time to figure out other plans. I have tried to call back multiple times today and couldn't get back through to them.
vee foster: They were so nice they were so kind I'm making a donation to them right now
Claire Woods: I am beyond happy with my animals from APS Durham!! The staff was super nice and you can tell how much they care about the furry friends there! Durkio and Pizza (now named ash) are very well socialized and some really cool dudes!
Deb Springer: They do a great job trying to meet the needs and adopt animals out. They also run a foster program which helps balance shelter capacity as well as work with the dogs in a home situation.
Shelby Guthrie: Very cute and happy animals :)
hepptino: I got two of my favorite animals here but they are a kill shelter. Not just kill for dying animals but killing for animals with bad attitudes. I feel horrible for any animal that has to go here and even for the horrible people who work here and their conscience.
E B: The staff were fantastic! I encountered 2 strays the staff assisted with getting them medicated, chipped, and finding their owners. If you are looking for a dog please consider the shelter.
Alexandra Lawrence: This shelter does not care about animals, it is a kill shelter. A stray dog that we had taken in went to a foster home, where he got hurt and was brought to this shelter. We went to pick up the dog and take care of him ourselves, and they told us he was scheduled to be euthanized that same evening and there was nothing we could do. I would not trust APS with any animals
Kathi Moon: Really appreciate the quality chiropractic care and the warm helpful staff at The Joint in Chapel Hill. No appointment necessary makes it so easy that I've been going for more than five years and I feel great!
Pat Combs: Love that placeHave adopted a dog and then a cat. Staff was wonderful.
Eliza Grow: I got a wonderful, cute dog named Jack from the shelter. I give it a five out of five stars rating. Everybody was super nice day and prices are pretty good.
Brenda Scott: We adopted a cat, Greta, years ago. She has been a GREAT ADDITION to our family! Or we could say…..she adopted us!!
Alora Powell: me and my fiancé picked up a lovely cat, his name in the shelter was Jack. amazing process! but now we named him Nitro! 🖤 i’d recommend getting a kitty from this shelter
Jordyn Curtin: It’s a kill shelter. They can claim they are animal lovers and want to help- but at the end of the day if you don’t jump through all the hoops they have to save an animals life, they will euthanize them. It’s sad really. I have a 12 year old husky and because I couldn’t provide ALL her vaccination work (even though I provided the last 5 years which was all I could find since I’ve moved 3 times since I got her at 8 weeks old) they denied me. It’s an awful place.
Courtney Norris: I had a great experience with my child adopting a kitten from this shelter. The staff was friendly and helpful. The kitten room was clean and the animals were in great health. Our kitten was already spayed and had her first round of vaccines. Our vet gave her a perfect bill of health and opined that our kitten was confident and well socialized. I will adopt from this facility again in the future.
Jadaa: Love my kitty❤️ Roommates got the sister too! They were very helpful and informative on the kitties. Definitely reach out to them if you need pet advice

Kate TerBeck: We just picked up our new family member (7 month old kitten). The facility is clean and well staffed. We are very happy with our new bundle of love.
K: I hope your animal never gets lost in the first place, but I desperately hope that if your pet does wander off and is taken somewhere to be housed until you find them, they are NEVER taken to the Durham Co. Animal Shelter. Its was a concrete cell. Not even hay to lay on. My dog lost his voice, his hair and his waistline. I'm completely disgusted.
Laura Gibbon: Came to look and possibly arrange to meet a foster. Ended up coming home with the sweetest dog. The humans are so helpful. We were even allowed to see how our adoptee would do with a cat. They are swimming in kittens as of July 2022. The kitty room was such a treat full of playful babies. They can definitely use your support with donations and extra food and treats. Such a worthwhile place to help.

Orange County Animal Services: what do users think?
Denice Fisher: Great
Dorothy Gerard: I appreciate the excellent service and help with a stray cat that I received from everyone I had contact with at the Shelter. It was such a positive experience and great interactions with wonderful, caring people.
Hope Marie: I adopted Pip* a little over a year ago. Everyone was very nice and helpful. She's a happy kitty now. 😻
Kassidy Janney: I don’t usually judge when it comes to animal shelters because I believe that all that matters at the end is the animals are being well taken care of, and get adopted at some point. But I took a tour of the shelter and met the employees, and they all seemed nice, they just don’t have that many employees for a big animal shelter like there’s and when it comes to cleaning as well it wasn’t really maintained that well. I’ve been to the Burlington animal shelter and they’re always right on top of it when it comes to making sure everything is clean and they don’t even have that many employees. But please don’t hesitate to adopt at these shelters bc they really need the help and getting these poor animals out.
Johnny Abarca: I Had Came Here To Ask About Geting Some Pets spayed but I waited at the front desk for 5 minutes and in the 5 minutes I got no help and the workers that saw me stared at me as If I don't belong here Do Not Recommend This Place I Felt Very Unwelcome Here Not Sure What I Did To Get This Treatment
Nicholas Carroll: I took home a perfect friend and lost her less than four months later to FELV - a diagnosis that I wasn't informed of at adoption and which was not noted anywhere on the health screening paperwork I received. I'm sure they're doing their best with what they have here, but I'd also recommend prospective adopters look anywhere else.
Q. Twins: After taking a cat for affordable rabies vaccination I received an mail that I have to register the cat for $10 because apparently every dogs & cats legally required to do so in Orange county.Wish they had disclosed this at the beginning on their website or in person while we were there instead of this sneaky way.
salt: We adopted our cat (previously known as Queso) around 6-7 months ago. He was a shy little kitten but really came out of his shell. We had a pretty good experience and the staff members really helped us and answered all our questions during the meet and greet. Looking forward to possibly adopting another from here in the future!
Sabrina McCormick: Great place to go to adopt.
Khazar Lewis: Within any establishment there are certain expectations that need to be met and this This was the worst experience I’ve ever had at an animal shelter. The customer service from the staff was terrible. One woman bumped into a friend of mine without bothering to say excuse me. Another lady gave us misinformation regarding the meet and great with one of the dogs named Guapo. The only person who was kind enough to take their job seriously was Harold at the front desk who was extremely helpful and initially told us we would be able tomeet Guapo. The cages were unkept, with feces and urine on the floor 30 minutes before the shelter was supposed to close which leads me to believe that these animals sleep under these conditions. This standards being held at this establishment is extremely unsatisfactory and I will not be coming back.
D’aja Harrison: As an out of town visitor, I visited this location today. Upon arrival, Harold greeted me with outstanding service and let me know that I could have a “meet & greet” which was provided with thorough instructions. I stopped to look at the Kittens and as I prepared to walk away an employee wearing a red shirt aggressively motioned me out of her way. She had an extremely rude disposition. My friends and I were appalled at her behavior. As well as the conditions of the puppies living standards. We had an urge to get to know guapo, and proceeded to follow protocol for a meet and greet. Another employee at the front desk named krista told us that we weren’t allowed to meet guapo. We didn’t understand why we weren’t allowed the same service that we were offered when we initially arrived. With confusion and disagreement we inquired on what disqualified us from the service. She led by asking us who gave us permission. I felt compelled to defend my rights. Eventually we were granted the time to spend meeting guapo. When leaving we witnessed associates talking about us & making a mockery. This type of behavior was disgusting and abominable.
Lisa Anthony: Great shelter! Staff are helpful, kennels/roooms are cleaned well every day, cats are socialized by volunteers.
Yien Liao: I adopted Veronica (now is Mia) five years ago after visiting here every day for a week. I checked many adult cats and kittens, and Mia was the most friendly cat to me. The shelter was very clean, and had rooms for you to meet with cats one by one. Thanks for the staffs’ patience and help! Mia is doing great and is the best gift of my life. If I want a second cat I will definitely visit again!
Carolyn Raihala: Have dogs listed as up for adoption that have already been adopted. Nice work y’all.
Andrea Garofolo: I absolutely have the home respect for ocas, very caring and clean facilities
Kyle Bates: She is the most amazing dog ever thank you so much!
Michelle Tart: Staff and vet was so nice and did a great job
wendy weaver: Love this place, they do great work for the animals they come across
Mihaly: I adopted a cat from OCAS. Super helpful staff and just an absolutely wonderful selection of pets looking for their forever homes. This buddy is my best friend (who wakes me up every morning with his loving head nudges) and he's truly changed my life for the better. This shelter helped make it possible and I thank them for their priceless contribution to Orange County.
Lorelai S: i cannot say enough nice things about these people. i adopted my kitten Buttercup (Bea now lol) from them about a week and a half ago. they helped me months before talk through my plan for introducing her to our other cat, what age would best fit our household, giving me detailed info of the cats background to see if they’d enjoy living with other cats/people. these employees truly take the time to get to know and love these animals and do their best to send you home with your best friend. i really can’t even explain how thankful i am for the time the staff took to just talk to me about becoming a pet owner and everything. here’s some pics of Bea all settled in
Mz BossBoss: They absolutely wonderful and they will be there to help you with all your needs with your pets or if you want to adopt they're amazing the staff is beyond helpful.
