The Counselor in Cary: what do users think?
Garret Woods: It's been years, but looking back now, I can see this was a harmful experience. The worst was when he laughed at me as I described an assault where I was the victim. Another time, he gave me an opinion on brain injury that I've since confirmed was inconsistent with the medical community. There were some helpful moments, but it's all a little tainted.
Will Eason: Gary is an excellent therapist and counselor. He is highly accommodating, and makes an effort to be available when you need him, whether or in person or via a phone call. His office is always clean and organized. His council can be intimidating at times, but Gary does a good job of saying what you need to hear without pushing beyond what you can process at the time. He encourages critical thinking and self evaluation to better understand the root of the behavior pattern(s) you're trying to adjust. I spent almost two years with Gary and don't regret a single session. Working with Gary has given me the tools to go forward living a life that is better aligned with my goals. I wouldn't hesitate to reach out again should the need arise.
CLJM: I cannot speak highly enough of Garry. I have been to several therapists and Garry was amazing. He was able to easily see patterns and things that I was unaware of. He quickly got to the bottom of things and was typically spot on. Garry helped me process and recover from one of the toughest times in my life and I am forever grateful.
charlene gilmore: I've been to 4-5 counselors over the last 20 years & despite my best efforts, I struggled to find the benefit. I often left with a feeling that I wasn't being challenged enough or that I didn't hear anything that I hadn't already tried or adopted as a practice. But, when I hit an all-time low 3 years ago, I made some desperate calls. And I'm fortunate that Garry called me back almost immediately. The concern and compassion I heard on that phone call (almost a mini-session with me bawling my eyes out in the middle of Target) kept me going til our first appointment. He set aside time for me every week for nearly two months until I'd gotten back to my feet and I've been going twice a month ever since. Garry's skill is in helping you find and confront the answers that are right in front of you. And develop the mechanism(s) to make actual and lasting change. I appreciate his humor and kindness, and he has been known to call a spade a spade too. I recommend calling Garry if you are looking to change some things in your life.
Justin Tallman: I look back over the last couple of years and I am amazed at how far I have been able to come. Since I have been working with Garry, I have been able to glean so much guidance and wisdom through our sessions. Garry met me where I was emotionally and mentally and helped me formulate where I wanted to be. By peeling back the layers, he helped me understand what makes me tic and how I can change the way I think and act in positive way. Not only was Garry able to help me with my immediate issue, but he also has given me the tools I need for continual improvement that I can use for the rest of my life. For all of this I am eternally grateful!
Heather: Garry is an amazing counselor. He’s emotionally intelligent and has a graceful way of being honest. He’s excellent at helping the client identify key concepts and dig deeper into what might seem like “surface” issues.By speaking with Garry I have gained insight into my past and have identified old patterns of behavior which no longer serve me. I cannot say enough good things about Garry, I am so fortunate to have worked with him!
L E.: Garrison is an excellent therapist and member of the community. He is a critical thinker with excellent listening skills and can help with a multitude of things including boundary setting and mindfulness.
Jennifer: My former husband and I went to Garry for marriage counseling to try to save our marriage. We were really struggling and unhappy. We ended up separating but it turns out that was the best decision we could have made for our relationship and our family. Garry never pushed us one way or another but instead helped us uncover the underlying issues and recurrent problems that were dragging down the marriage. He also helped us see some of our own personal issues that were negativity impacting the relationship. We both experienced a lot of self discovery and growth during our time with Garry. Our marriage is over but our happiness with each other and in life is better than it's been in years. We're grateful for the help and guidance Garry offered us.
G Ligon: Garry is a most accomplished counselor adept at listening and loaded with helpful approaches to peaceful living. Wish I had found him decades earlier. It could take a while for an appointment to open up as he is fully booked, but is worth the wait.
Kristen Lampuri: If you're looking for a counselor who truly cares, who gives insightful thoughts and direction while listening in a very approachable manner, you've found your guy. Garry is extremely intelligent and well trained, yet also very compassionate and deliberate. He has helped me pause before reacting, use intellect over emotion, and strengthen my own abilities to be strong in my own right. He's been an amazing resource during a dark time in my life and has helped me take the necessary steps in coming out the other side.
Mario Kroll: Spoke with Gary while I was going through a personal crisis and called him out of state. He returned my call immediately, was very helpful even on a brief call. He's a down-to-earth, no-bullshit, yet non-judgmental pragmatist that listens well, comes up with holistic ideas regardless of what your issues are, and all around is the best mental health professional I've seen. His space is comfortable, non-pretentious and inviting, and my sessions with Gary fly by, usually with at least a handful of immediately implementable insights that have improved the quality of my life and those around me. I highly recommend Gary as counselor especially if dealing with trauma, addiction, depression, relationship issues, and similar situations.
M Kedvesi: Garry Murray has been a great help guiding me and my wife through the issues that have emerged with raising three teenagers. His logical approach and practical advice has given us confidence to handle the complex issues in a blended family. I highly recommend Garry for anyone seeking results-driven counseling and expert guidance.
Anthony Bizzaro: More of a thank you than a review. Garry is kind, patience, and empathic. He's a great listener, and he understands. At the same time, Garry was able to help me accept reality, consider my motives, and modify my behavior.Therapy isn't easy if you're doing it right, but it's worth it. "The only way past is through." With Garry's help, I found what I sought for so many years. I didn't just trade one attachment for the next. I worked on developing a truer sense of self and purpose. If you're here, go. Sit in the far chair. Let down your guard, just a bit. See what happens. What can you lose at this point, right?
Adrienne Robinson: I would highly recommend Gary...he helped me get through a difficult time. I have and will continue to recommend him!
Sue Rakes - SRP admin: I have searched high and low for a caring, capable, and competent therapist for many years! Garry has been a genuine gift in my life and has helped me grow immeasurably. Garry really genuinely listens and has a fabulous blend of humor and sympathy to share at the right times. His recommendations have been great a great guidance for me through some very dark times, and his energy and his understanding of bigger principles have helped me to see my life with a different perspective. I have trusted Garry in my life for several years and am so grateful for his authentic help.
V V: Want to learn how to think out your problems on your own? This is the guy you need to see! Absolutely the best!!! Highly recommended!
Mary Reiss: I have known Garry for some time and greatly respect his skill as a clinician. He is one of the brightest and most talented therapists in the field. Garry really understands issues at their core and can break down concepts and therapeutic paths in a way that is practical.I have recommended clients to Garry and feel confident that any one I send to him will truly benefit from working with him.
James Campbell: Gary is great I have been his client for 7 years and it has been worth it. He is caring and listens very well and give you suggestions to help you make your own choices. He makes you think. Keep up the great work
Barbara Toth: I've been to other counselors in the past for long standing personal issues but have never felt the hope and progress I feel with Garry. His approach is proactive, direct, honest, and professional. Garry applies extensive professional knowledge with personal warmth and a sincere desire to help. I have recommended his service to others for marriage counseling and they have expressed that their marriage has been strengthened and they actively practice methods Garry has taught to change destructive behaviors. I trust Garry as an informed and intuitive guide and highly recommend him to anyone seeking counseling.
Patricia Blossom: Like many my life is complicated. I needed a counselor who operates with integrity, strong ethics and would offer special attention to complicated issues.Garry is very engaging and explains things well. His office is a safe, pleasant space for me and I like to go there. This helps me think in ways I did not before. Sometimes this is challenging, but he is comfortable to work with.I have gained a lot of strengths from this relationship and I do indeed recommend his services!
Barbara Friedewald: Garry is helping me wade through some sad and angry feelings resulting from the crash of my 25 year marriage. He is a real human being whose commitment to his clients is based on his education, training, and experience. His informal style and his comprehensive understanding of human behavior put me at ease from the beginning. My time with him has been affirming, fluid, thought-provoking and interactive. He has encouraged me to use intellect over emotion and to take charge of my life. He has given me language to describe random feelings in a comfortable and positive environment. He has a gentle but firm way of challenging my life-long beliefs, some of which need discarding.I would recommend his services (and have, actually) to anyone who would like to talk to someone who listens. I’ve thought about talking to a therapist many times before. This time I took action to my great benefit. It has been two years since I first consulted Garry . We meet less often now than in the beginning. His treatment has adapted to offering suggestions for living my best life. His insight and empathy during crisis and beyond is a gift.

Mathews Counseling: what do users think?
Sydel Fisher: Dr. Adam Mathews is an excellent clinician, and he is especially knowledgable about and helpful with LGBTQIA2S+ issues. He seems very passionate about his work and excited to support his clients and promote their growth and welfare.
Samantha Burcher: Kenzie Davis is a thoughtful, genuine and empathetic person who has inspired and uplifted me to be a better therapist myself. She and I were in the same graduate program with her having had a head-start on her studies. She is kind, good-humored, and knowledgeable--I know she used her skills to calm my anxieties more than once, and I have every faith her clients will benefit just as I did.
Josh Simone: Therapist was indifferent about my problems and told me everything that I was doing wrong, rather than just listening and being understanding. Started sessions there because of anxiety, but the anxiety just got worse with my therapy and the therapist made me feel horrible about myself. Never again. Life is hard as it is, people don't need therapists making it worse. Better off popping pills than talking with people from Mathews Counseling. Stay away from this place!
Alaina Cabreros: First things first my experience initially went very well. Sarah was very kind and extremely helpful in helping us find a counseling fit. However of course that is the case, each session is a $110 dollars and come July would go up to $120. Where my one star rating comes from, is that my husband and I followed Matthews counseling paperwork to a T and did it together. Filled out our profile, signed all our paper work. No where in that process did a confirmation email state that my paper work was completed. Their policy is that all paperwork must be completed. While filling out the summary and what not, I accidentally missed my "what are your hobbies box". I have respect for their boundaries. However our counselor Kenzi was very rude morning of our first 3pm session and without looking at my paperwork or opened to see what WAS completed cancelled our appointment at 7am. Followed by a "I am on vacation until June 5th email". Hey I get it, it's memorial weekend. I get that the paper work needed to get done, however if she took 2 minutes to open my file, she'd have seen that I just missed my hobbies box and most if not all paper work was completed. I honestly believed I finished the paper work and it was an honest mistake, but because their was no confirmation that it didn't get done we lost our spot. My husband and I took our session very seriously and I wrote a very detailed section on why we were coming in for help. I gave a 1 star because for $110-$120 dollars and not coming into a facility doing it online, having someone not care to take two minutes to see what caused all the paperwork (a hobby box) confusion 8 hours before a session, I would rather, absolutely take my time and money to a professional company that cares about our success as a couple. That right there showed me that this is a money guzzling company that shows no passions for helping others and thrives off of people and their deteriorating mental health. If she took two minutes to see that all our paperwork was signed at the same time and opened what I wrote and saw what happened I wouldn't be sitting here trying to tell others about how Mathew's counseling made us feel prior to walking in. If this is just a start up session, why would I pay someone for help and continue to pay those prices if they work from home and can't empathize with people who aren't technologically savvy. And I will not invest somewhere that treats people that way. The cherry on top, is that when I emailed back, Kenzi was not accommodating and didn't bother rescheduling or verifying where in the communication issue was. She pretty much said "thanks for your time" bye. And frankly I do not want my money going to someone who cancels then blames us without trying to see where the communication blip was. I had high hopes, however there are other companies on line that are better suited. Spend your $110-$120 on a therapist who actually cares and doesn't look at someone's hardship as a profit. Yes we need help, but we don't need to invest in a company whose values don't align and who don't practice what they are preaching. So THANK YOU for your time. My husband and I will find a company better suited to what $110-$120 is worth.
William S: My "ex-wife to be" and I worked with several counselors for years before finishing up with Dr. Mathews. I can honestly say he was the worst of the bunch. Looking back, his level of indifference was only matched by his capacity to grandstand. While we are all ultimately solely accountable for our success or failure his methodology only alienated us from each other even further. Truthfully, if you are to this point in your marriage you are likely better off seeking individual counseling paired with competent legal advice. Regardless, I cannot recommend Dr. Mathews for counseling in any form. You will find the best counselors do not have a PhD or MD.
Lauren Blackwell: My experience with Mathews Counseling has been incredible to say the least! I worked with Sarha for about a year and she was sooo wonderful in helping me navigate life changes and achieve my goals for therapy. I feel so much more equipped for any curveballs that life throws my way and I have Sarha and her incredible insight and patience to thank for that!
Philip Boyne: I can only attest to my meetings with my therapist (Michael). He has been incredible. He is so helpful to me and is a man of great character. My interactions with the staff at Matthews Counseling have been consistently and thoroughly kind. I would give Matthews Counseling my highest recommendation.
S. Shan: We have been meeting with Redonno Carmon for about a year at Mathews Counseling. At first we weren’t certain about the fit, but it turns out that talking with him has been one of the best choices we have made in our marriage. He is a good listener and guide, he has a gentle sense of humor, he in perceptive, helpful and challenging in all the right ways. He has been particularly helpful in challenging times and we are very grateful to have found him for our marriage counseling.
Laurie: Dr. Adam Mathews is a fine and fair clinician. I refer to him and his clinic frequently for his expertise in couples and compassion for people. He is highly trained as a couples counselor/ marital therapist in Emotionally Focused Therapy as well as Gottman therapy. He's a professor, podcaster giving unfailingly of himself to students and couples who desperately need his message.
Carole Cullen, LMFT: As a therapist, I want to know that clients I refer for therapy are going to be in good hands and will be taken care of by an expert in the field. When I refer to Adam and Mathews Counseling, I can feel secure knowing that they will be taken care of with respect, care and expertise. Adam is a skilled therapist but more importantly he is warm, funny and easily approachable. My clients have given me great feedback about their experience at Mathews Counseling and their progress in therapy.
Shelly Hummel, LMFT: Adam is a gifted and knowledgeable therapist - but he's also just a delightful person. He's down to earth and easy to talk to - that's what you want in a therapist, right? I often times will refer clients to Adam and they always report back that they feel very comfortable and in good hands with Adam.
Adrienne Alden: I recommend this practice to people regularly. The office is lovely. The therapists are well trained, genuine, and caringl. They do good work here!
James Hart: I know Adam in a professional capacity and would have no hesitation referring my family law clients to him or his practice.
Daniel Stillwell: One of my favorite things about Chris is he grapples with the struggles clients bring. Some therapists do therapy on you; Chris does it with you. With humor, with patience, and with a keen insight into patterns of both problem and solution.
Jordan Harris: They really look at the big picture, which means they pull in everyone you need to help you with your problem.
Kevin Shelby: The Mathews are, without a doubt, some of the finest counselors I've had the privilege of knowing. They have an amazing ability to walk with people through pain and find ways of leading them towards healing. The richness of their experience and expertise combined with their compassionate and gracious presence provides the perfect atmosphere for self-exploration, discovery, and growth. Meeting with them will be well worth your time and money!
Libby Gifford: Both Adam and Rebekah have been listening ears and wise counsel for me many times. They have each built trust with me through supportive, non-judgemental conversations and have challenged me to become a more healthy version of myself.
tiffany oneal: The Mathews Counseling Agency is one of a kind. They make you feel truly cared for. You don't feel alone during your counseling process.
Debra Mathews: Mathews Counseling is a warm and confidential place to find healing. The therapist are highly qualified.
Tim Allen: Amazing people, would trust them with any of my family members!
Vinay Saranga: I have known Adam for several years, and he truly cares about his clients. All his clients enjoy working with him, and they feel he provides very useful feedback.
