Lulu Press: what do users think?
Alan Holland (Randy): It's really a mixed bag. The templates and quality of printing is extraordinary for the price. I'm really, really happy with the final product. Customer service on the other hand, is a nightmare. I spent the last two weeks waiting for a response to an issue that's been around for three weeks. And this is after multiple emails asking for a response to the ticket – they don't have a customer service desk. I think they mean well, and deliver a good product, but need to seriously work on customer interaction and problems.
shuly rothman: the book i ordered did NOT match what it says. the letters are soo small. not worth it to return will just cost me ,moremy first try with lulushuly
Nick Hounshell: Their customer service took forever to get back to me. Well let me rephrase, their customer service never has gotten back to me and its been over a week since my initial query with them. Im trying to print a book that was open source and they still canceled it. I know for a fact this book had been printed before because other people recommended this website to me who have gotten that exact book printed with them. They canceled my order and blocked my account without even letting me talk to them and without warning. Just go to staples to print your stuff.
Lucia Clontz: Alpha Graphics recommended Lulu Press for my small project. I was surprised to see how easy it was to create and design my soft cover book. The cost was great and I could not wait to see the finished product. I received my book today and it’s beautiful, exactly what I wanted. The quality of materials is excellent. I highly recommend Lulu Press and plan to create additional projects.
Adrienne Randle: Lulu has great products but you'll always get misinformation. The website will not give you the correct pricing information and they'll change the price of your print cost whenever they want. The website constantly isn't updated with correct processing and shipping time. It says on every FAQ page it's 3-5 days to print the project and then whatever shipping cost you pay for. However, it'll take them 10 business days to print and they'll give an excuse that their internal system has a different timeframe which is completely unhelpful for customers.DONT WAST YOUR MONEY PRINT WITH THEM! Will be a headache.
Thomas Morgan: Update 9/21/22: With the apparent demise of create space, I have come back to Lulu for short runs. Better experience.I am an experienced publisher and used lulu a couple of times for small orders without too many problems. Just want you to know I had a VERY bad experience with these people - duplicate charges and they were VERY slow to even INITIATE a refund - the website took the order without my placing it. They also do something which is technically prohibited; they take a payment for a product they haven't delivered or created yet. So if you discover a problem, you can't cancel the order or get your money back. The preview does NOT represent your finished product. STAY AWAY unless you don't care what your printed product looks like and can wait until they get around to printing your order. I was ASTONISHED to learn that they have NO IDEA where or when your product is being printed. Which is fine if you don't need it anytime soon. The reality is that there are plenty of other online communities to promote your work. The gimmick sales just bring the printing price inline with the market. Finally, don't expect any satisfaction from "customer service". Stick with the e-books here is my recommend.
Mark and Kit Murphy: Can't get the money from our products that sold.
Attila Brockman: Great business- provided great service after a fraudulent transaction- happy to recommend!!
Joyce Jones: I can't get a hold of a person to talk to. Terrible communication and they released the book early without my approval! Copy is wrong, as their print department printed an old file!
Tiago Aquino Fernandes Lopes: It's my number one option for printing my books... It's easy, affordable, and they have a good quality.
Marie Sapienza: Critical:ProfessionalismI am losing calendar sales because their site is not functioning properly. This has been an ongoing issue over the last week. It only completes purchases occasionally, customers and I are frustrated, and I get NO response from their customer service. I won't use them again.
Culture Girl Beauty, LLC: If I could give 0 stars right now, I would. I placed an order for expedited shipping as I have an extremely important meeting surrounding the item I published this week for my business. I received the order yesterday, however, it is not what I created and ordered. It is another one of their customer's book so I'm only assuming that someone else received my order. This is a huge concern! The correct packing slip was included, but not the right item! How does that happen? I put in a support ticket as soon as my order arrived and I have not received any response other than the automated one. I tried to call customer support, but for some reason this is not currently an available service for customers. Extremely unfortunate. If you are going to only offer email support, the ability to reach out to your customers should be done in a more pressing manner. I have reached out on IG and Facebook. I received promising response on IG, but when I followed the responders request to send a DM via messenger, the response was horrible. There is no urgency to resolve customer complaints. They responded by saying they have significantly more complaints....well, duh! This is what happens when your customer service platform is not set up appropriately. I will never use them again and will share my experience on every platform that I can find.
Krit Panyawongkhanti: Critical:Quality,ResponsivenessUnsatisfying customer service. They do not even have the courtesy to allow their customer to reach them via phone call.
Pastor E Live: Critical:Professionalism,Responsiveness,ValueTerrible customer service. Can’t reach them on the phone and won’t respond to email on time either. They waste your time and energy. Not a good company to work with
dr joerg maier: Critical:Professionalism,Quality,Responsiveness
Monica Robinson: I used Lulu for my first book, was pleased, and never had any issues until they did a major overhaul of their site with zero warning. The site has so many bugs, one of which released a draft of my book early and had people buying the wrong version for months despite customer service reps insisting that this wasn't possible, until I finally ordered a copy for myself and had physical proof. Shortly after this, revenue stopped going into my account. I had the receipts to prove that people were purchasing the book, but I've yet to be paid for any of it. When the site was overhauled, they took down all phone support lines and I notoriously cannot get a representative to consistently respond to my emails. It took over a month to get the titles removed from distribution in the first place, and I doubt I'll ever see the money they owe me. I filed with the BBB, but still have not reached a conclusion and have been ghosted by multiple reps. I'm mostly reviewing so that independent authors and self-published writers can stay away from this massive scam of a website. It's really horrible to treat customers this way in the first place, but knowing that many of them are indie authors who have trusted this site for years is even worse. Stay away.
57 Humbucker: Longtime user. Great quality but there is no phone support and they do NOT reply to emails. If you have a technical problem you are out of luck.
De Ivery: Critical:Professionalism,Quality,ResponsivenessThe online links always break, affecting my sales. They sent out a blank book with nothing but the title page. And when it cane time getting help on the issue, there was no one. The phone number gets you nowhere, abs the chat support is constantly down. I will not be publishing with them ever again!!
Chad Twedt: Lulu's "print ready" process (which happens automatically after uploading your graphics) causes deterioration in graphics, and unfortunately, the people at Lulu just don't want to admit this (or they don't see it, which would actually be worse). My book's front and back covers have gradients on them, and Lulu's automated "print ready" processing caused severe banding in the gradients. I pointed this out, and instead of acknowledging it and telling me I just needed to work around their limitation (which I would have done - I'm a flexible, reasonable person), they told me that my original supplied graphics (PNG) had banding in it.I posted to a forum of graphic designers asking if anyone saw banding in my original supplied graphics, and everyone said the gradient was perfectly smooth. I also got proofs from a couple local printing companies using the same original PNG cover that I uploaded to Lulu, and there was virtually no banding. (I say "virtually" because a tiny, negligible amount of banding is to be expected since professional printers are apparently well-known to have trouble with gradients. The printing companies explained to me that although my supplied graphics have no banding, I have to expect banding to occur during the print process when taken to professional printers. Lulu was unaware of this - or worse, they were aware of this but withheld the information from me through many exchanges of e-mails.)The banding in Lulu's proofs was severe. Additionally, I made a video just for Lulu (recording my PC desktop) that empirically proved there is no banding in my PNG: I measured RGB values of 100 horizontal pixels in a row in my original PNG and Lulu's generated PDF. The RGB values in my PNG each changed independently of each other, they only changed by 1 value at a time, and they changed in a "scattered" fashion (toggling back and forth between two neighboring values for a while before finally switching for good to the new value). This is as smooth as a digital gradient can possibly be without actually being analog (i.e. real life brush strokes on physical paper). In the video, I created a table in Excel that contrasted this with Lulu's generated PDF (the software-produced "print ready" file that results after uploading the PNG), and the RGB values of Lulu's processed graphics did not change independently of each other, there was no "scattering" when they did change, and the values stayed the same for 50 or 100 pixels at a time. SEVERE banding. After all this, one of the high-up print professionals at Lulu (Cary) said he still saw banding!I asked him to forward my e-mail to others in his department to view on their own computer monitors. He said he would to see if he was "missing something." Ne never got back to me.Again, I would have been willing to adjust my graphics - I may have even been willing to get rid of the gradients and try something totally different. It wasn't the gradient that was the issue. It was how Cary handled this very simple problem, blaming me for it and failing to acknowledge that their print-ready process absolutely obliterates gradients. When faced with overwhelming evidence that does not support their position, they ignore it. I would have given this feedback directly to Lulu instead of posting it here, but I am way beyond that with Lulu. They had their chance and they blew it.I should note that the girl who first answered the phone was always very nice, but unfortunately she had limited technical knowledge to comment on my issue - she passed my issue on to others, and to my knowledge, I don't think anyone other than Cary handled it.
Bill Stuart: Self publishing and publish on demand. We use the to publish textbooks that are affordable for students.
Al Thompson: Wonderful place to self publish. They are continually making improvements for the best product results. There is an abundance of online support for technical issues. My books are printed with the finest materials available for gift giving. I may publish again with a selling strategy to recoup printing costs. Glad to have this business within an hour's drive from my home. Proud of them.
