Awakenings Counseling for Couples and Sex Therapy: what do users think?
Amanda Neff: The Awakenings team is full of talented therapists competent in individual counseling and marriage counseling. The therapists here are high trained in a wide variety of issues including anxiety, depression, and attachment.
Kelly Bourque: Laurie (the owner of this practice) is phenomenal. With her in leadership, I feel so confident referring to this group for sex therapy. I just learned they do intensives too!
The Real Deal: I really feel like I was not listened to by the therapist.17 years ago, when I went to a therapist with my wife she acted as an interpreter for us. Every time I said something, she would turn and translate it to my wife in a language that she could understand. And when my wife said something she would turn and translate it to me in a language that I could understand.Despite my wife's infidelity we came out of that situation more in love than we had ever been. We only had one session together, but it changed our marriage and made it wonderful for several years. Unfortunately, we grew apart again because we did not continue going to regular therapy sessions. However, the therapy session that we had recently really made me feel ganged up on. I felt like I couldn't communicate my needs. I was constantly told that I wasn't listening to what my wife was saying, when she wants to end our 20-year marriage. But at the same time nobody was willing to listen to me or help me be heard as I begged for additional counseling before throwing away our marriage. I was just told that I was pursuing too hard and I needed to step back.I did not feel as if I came out of the experience having learned any tools for communication with the woman who is the most important thing in my life. I am now heartbroken and have agreed to a 6-month separation where we will live in different states before going ahead with the divorce and throwing away 20 years of marriage with my dream girl, all because I couldn't talk to her.And these therapists were no help.Edit: Owner/manager replied to this review SIX YEARS AFTER I originally wrote it, and their main contribution was to question whether or not I was even actually a client. That should tell you everything you need to know about this awful “counseling” clinic. Lowered to one star.
Casey Bishopp: The quality of the therapy isn't the issue. I'm rating them 3 stars because I was charged $160 before my session even started, then it turned out there was a missed communication and the session had to be rescheduled anyway. They did not inform me of this until less than two hours before my session, and I missed the call because it was during the workday. So now I have to wait for the reimbursement to go back on my card...it seems unfair that I can't cancel a session in that short a time frame without paying a penalty but they can.I can completely understand that things happen and I don't hold this against my therapist or the nice person who answered the phone and helped me. But it's messed up and bad business to preemptively charge someone for a service they have yet to receive. It turned me off and I won't be back, unfortunately.$160 may not seem like a ton of money but every single cent counts when you're paying out of pocket.
Shelby Matlock: Mediocre therapy that is out of network for all insurance providers. Be prepared to pay $250 for the first session and $135 for subsequent sessions all of which are outside of any insurance network. Didn't realize this until I tried to submit a claim after I had racked up $1000+ in bills.
Ellen M: Was trying to find a therapist. Sent them an email, they didn't respond. About a month later I tried again. They said they didn't see my original email, fine, things get lost.We did a back and forth for a bit I got some information on prices and availability of therapists and when I asked to have a 15min consultation call with the therapist before officially making an appointment (I've paid for unhelpful therapists in the past and did not want to jump into anything too fast) they never responded to me again.
Robin Hinton: We were charged for an appointment on a Monday which we tried to reschedule due to a death in the family on Saturday. Not 48 hours we were told and that’s policy. For a business whose purpose is supposed to be helping deal with life, they are very unconcerned and adamant on policy. It seems their #1 purpose is money. We will not recommend this business. They were no help to us, in fact they added stress to our marriage!
Steve Edmundson: I'm only aware of Laurie through her podcast, FOREPLAY - Radio Sex Therapy. And my wife and I are totally blown away.Laurie's frank and comfortable approach to what is usually a touchy topic is incredibly refreshing and very helpful. We love the podcast and hope that we never feel we need her in person services but I have to believe that she would be awesome to work with in person. Thanks for the podcasts and keep them coming!
Adam Mathews: I fully trust Laurie and her team when it comes to couples and sexual issues. Laurie is one of the most competent and knowledgeable therapists I know. She has a gift of being able to translate that knowledge in a way that is both understandable and motivating. She genuinely cares for her clients. i could not recommend her more highly.
Erin Bostrom: I know they provide outstanding marriage counseling and sex therapy. And I have heard through multiple people that they have a well known and excellent reputation. I know this because I know people who have gone there and have had good experiences and great success.
B MB: We tried awakenings for a few sessions. If you decide to seek their help, make sure you have a clear understanding of their prices. There was some confusion over payments. The manager was helpful in resolving that issue. As for the sessions, I was fine with them for the most part, but we felt it would have been more helpful to have a therapist who has been married, and has made a marriage work with kids.
Derek Watson: Great counseling at Awakenings!
Polly Watson: I’m a gynecologist and have been referring patients to Laurie for sex therapy and marriage counseling for years and have gotten terrific feedback from patients. She is a natural at making people feel comfortable and at ease.
Lauren Turnbull: Laurie Watson is dedicated to helping couples communicate and improve their sex lives no matter what stage they're in. I highly recommend everything she does from her book to podcast - Foreplay Radio Sex Therapy. Her approach is friendly, relatable and easy to follow!!
Shelly Hummel: Laurie Watson and Awakenings is my go-to referral for sexual health. Laurie is an expert in the field and her expertise is only trumped by her compassion and empathy for her clients.
Carole Cullen, LMFT: Awakenings Center in Raleigh is a compassionate group of sex and couple therapists. I trust them with the care of my clients completely.
Emily Wegmann: The fantastic group of psychologist and practitioners at Awakenings provides professional and compassionate consoling for both individuals and couples seeking to reconnect their sexual life. Whether you're trying to consummate your marriage for the first time, reconnect with your partner after years of marriage or looking to enhance your sexual desire, Laurie and her group are the best in the Triangle.
Noah Boswell: Laurie Watson is extremely insightful, I highly recommend her book "Wanting Sex Again" for anyone in a relationship, marriage or even single if you intend to be in a relationship again. There is so much good information whether you need sex therapy or marriage counseling or not.
