Living Kitchen started out of a love for preparing and eating organic, delicious plant-based foods. We wanted to eat more mindfully, but couldn't find restaurants or products that delivered the flavor we were craving. So we decided to do it ourselves. Preparing real food made from living ingredients is only part of our mission. It is equally important that the food we serve is unapologetically delicious.

At Living Kitchen, the food we prepare is a labor of love. Everything we make is 100% organic, plant-based and locally sourced. We opened our flagship location in the historic South End neighborhood of Charlotte in 2011 as Luna’s Living Kitchen, and shortened the name to Living Kitchen in the summer of 2016. We serve a variety of dishes, traditional and unique, including plant-based creations of many classic dishes, from Pizza and Burgers to Pad Thai and Sushi. You can find something to satisfy and nourish you for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. We even have some grab-and-go options to take with you to enjoy later.

The building that houses Alexander Michael's is known historically as the Crowell-Berryhill Store and was originally opened in 1897 and served as “The Berryhill Store” for many years.

In the '60s and early '70s the 4th Ward neighborhood began to deteriorate. The building was among other things a paint store, a laundry mat and a gym for an English wrestler named “Tinker Todd”.

In the late '70s a group of investors/speculators began to revitalize the neighborhood. Buildings and houses were stripped to their frames, moved or destroyed. The building that is now Alexander Michael's was almost demolished but was refurbished to its present state by Cullie and Sylvia Tarleton. In the early 1980’s it was opened as a neighborhood store & deli for the community, but at that time there were not enough people living in the area to support it.

In January 1983 A. Michael Troiano Jr. & Alexander Copeland III leased the building at 401 West 9th Street in the newly revitalized “4th Ward”.

We are an American tavern obviously influenced by European pubs that came before us. We offer a good selection of beer and simple, fresh, well-prepared food that gives you value for your dollar served by a friendly attentive staff in a neighborhood tavern atmosphere. We know that we are not for everyone and frankly …. some people are just wound too tightly to enjoy themselves here.
