On January 26, the Greenspon Center hosted its inaugural program commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Combatting Hate: One Voice at a Time. Stephen Smith, Executive Director Emeritus of the USC Shoah Foundation, delivered the keynote speech and demonstrated groundbreaking holographic technology that helps preserve the stories of survivors. The inaugural 2023 Greenspon Center Upstander Award was presented to Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, currently of Winston-Salem, who showed heroism in the midst of a hostage situation in his former synagogue in Colleyville, Texas. The event brought to life a new way to remember, interact with, and learn about the Holocaust, antisemitism, and hate - while at the same time infusing a persistent flame of hope.

Charlotte’s 165 years of Jewish history is rich with civic, business and religious leaders, and philanthropists. As part of our Jacobs-Jaffa Charlotte Jewish Heritage Tour, participants will enjoy a unique, engaging, entertaining and educational hike through our city’s history. The experience will include a tour through the Hebrew Cemetery that was founded in 1867 and is rich with stories of the famous Jews who were buried there from the Civil War to the Civil Rights era to today. We will pass through historic sites that highlight Jewish contributions to our county and state, as we explore the pluralistic and powerful Jewish community that thrives in Charlotte today.

As a nonprofit interfaith organization, Shepherd's Center of Charlotte originated in 1978 in response to a need to redefine and restructure the way aging is approached. Located in and serving members of Mecklenburg County, Shepherd’s Charlotte continues to offer a variety of programs and services, ranging from social activities to transportation to Medicare consulting.
