For those that don't know, I'm rebuilding the engine and transmission in the IROC. I've got the transmission ready to go, just got to put the engine together.

Now, I wasn't able to get the parts to Jeff Graves, owner of Sellers Auto Machine 7416 Old Mount Holly Rd. Charlotte, NC, 704-393-8806, until Friday at lunch time. He knew the predicament I was in and knew I needed it back quick. I took the engine over last Monday, but didn't get the pistons, freeze plugs, and cam bearings to him until this past Friday. He called me Monday afternoon around 3:30 pm to let me know that the engine was ready. I picked it up today at lunch. Now, the machine work cost me $520. I think it is a good price. He turned the crank .010/.010, bored and honed the block, of course cleaned everything, installed the cam bearings, installed the freeze plugs, checked all the valve springs, replaced the valve seals, did a valve job, and of course cleaned and checked the heads. When I went to pick up the engine today, the engine was bagged, the crank was bagged, and the heads were painted. He then apologized for not painting the block. Of course, I told him not to worry about it, because I planned on painting everything myself.

Well, tonight, I went to start measuring everything. I started with the main journals on the crank, and wrote down all the measurements. Then I went and grabbed my 1990 Pontiac Firebird Service Manual to check the measurements to see how close the crank was. The one thing I noticed in my measurements was that the #1 journal was slightly bigger then the #2, 3 and 4 journals, and the #5 was the smallest. Checking the manual, it gave a range for the journal sizes. As it turns out each main journal measured exactly .010" smaller then the largest allowed size per the factory manual. Not just exact to the thousandths, exact to the ten thousandths position. (This means that the journals didn't measure .0101 or .0109 smaller, but exactly .0100.) After playing with my snap guages, and measuring each main bearing until I could get two measurements back to back the exact same, and using that measurement to check the oil clearance, and this is what I got for oil clearances, #1 = .0008 #2 = .0011 #3 = .0011 #4 = .0011 #5 = .0025. Per the Pontiac Service Manual, the minimum allowed oil clearances are as follows #1 = .0008 #2 = .0011 #3 = .0011 #4 = .0011 #5 = .0025. Now, that impresses the hell out of me. Not because this is the first engine he has done the machine work on, but the second. The first engine was the 455 Olds, and guess what, per the Olds manual I have, every thing was dead nuts on just like this one. Not just .010 turn to be within the factory range, but a .010 turn measured from the max diameter the factory allows. So, this is two times in a row that the thing has measured out prefectly.
