4worldlovers: After partnering with the Juniper Level Baptist Church Community Alliance in 2013 to begin work on the restoration of Panther Branch Rosenwald school, we are excited to be partnering with them again for a feasibility study to preserve and enhance 10 acres of wetlands in the Panther Branch community!


The project includes the concept design of an observatory and educational center, as well as walkways, boardwalks, and observatory vistas vistas to safely increase public access to the site (minimizing disturbance to the natural setting). Wetlands enhancements will also increase the capacity for habitats of endangered species.


Once completed the site will provide educational and training opportunities, and increase the recreational amenities available in Wake County’s southern region (where explosive growth and development is occurring). Local schools and community programs will be able to introduce students and families to wetland ecosystems, principals of land preservation, and wildlife and habitat conservation.


The feasibility study has begun in earnest, and we are thrilled to partner with Juniper Level Missionary Baptist Church and JLBC Community Alliance, Wake County Soil and Water Conservation and the department of Longe Range Planning, Design Workshop and the Carolina Wetlands Association on the project.


Funding is provided by the NC Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources Development Grant.

Last week we attended the AIA Walking Tour at Dix Park, co-led by our own Meredith Kirkpatrick and Brandy Thompson from Clearscapes. The tour was centered around adaptive re-use at Dix Park and was followed by a panel discussion about equity, inclusion, and the community engagement process at the park.

Brandy led us through the completed Chapel project, after which we walked down the hill to the Stone Houses where Meredith led us through the former Superintendent’s House, former Physician’s House, and the former Gatekeeper’s Cottage which are now under construction. These buildings are being renovated for commercial uses including the Dix Park Conservancy offices as well as a Visitor Center. This project includes extensive site work that will transform this section of the park into an active hub.

Construction is underway at 122 Glenwood! This first phase will include new offices for Monteith Construction on the 3rd floor, and open office space on the 2nd floor. The 1st floor will be retail space and the basement is home to Halcyon Bar & Lounge.

This utilitarian building dates back to 1912, and was constructed by former Raleigh mayor P.D. Snipes. With 3 main stories and a full basement, Snipes used the building to house the Raleigh franchise of a railroad company store. With plenty of room to spare he leased part of the space out to Garland C. Norris Company (an orange juice distributor), and during WWI uniforms were manufactured on the top 2 floors. Later in the 1970’s the building was renovated for gallery space.
