Tompkins Hall: what do users think?
Harlan Stafford: The original Tompkins Hall was the first textile building on campus, designed to resemble the latest turn-of-the-century cotton mills. Electrical power on the campus was not strong enough to operate the building's equipment, which included carding and spinning machines on the top floor, looms and warp preparations on the ground floor, and dyeing equipment in the basement. The building was destroyed by fire in 1914, and its successor reveals the continued influence of industrial architecture. However, the rebuilt Tompkins Hall displays Renaissance motifs in its high ceilings, central tower, roof brackets, and repeated pattern of white-outlined windows. A tower on the new Tompkins, intended to hold a water tank, was never used and, until 1928, displayed the numerals of the senior class each year. The tower was finally shortened and the building was renovated in 1981 for the humanities and social sciences. It is named for Daniel Augustus Tompkins (1852-1914) who designed it, supervised its construction, and was responsible for the passage of the bill that established the School of Textiles. Tompkins graduated in civil engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. After working as a machinist, draftsman and engineer, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, with the Westinghouse Corporation. There, he worked as a contracting and structural engineer, developer, and publisher of The Charlotte Observer. His advocacy for the establishment of textile schools at Clemson and NC State and his service on the college's Board of Trustees were essential for the growth of the textiles field. Tompkins established nearly 200 cottonseed-oil mills, 100 cotton mills, and a manufacturing plant for mill machinery; was president of four cotton mills; and wrote several books on manufacturing. His friend, George T. Winston wrote Tompkins' biography in 1908, and the two buildings named after the men have stood beside each other until 1981, when Caldwell Hall connected them.

The Graduate School: what do users think?
Shawn Johnson: The cost of living has been continuously going up, yet graduate students aren’t even paid enough to live. The average rent in Raleigh, in higher crime areas, is $1300+. Living on campus is even more expensive. If the graduate school really cares about the mental health of graduate students like they say they do, then rising the pay for GA/RA/TAs is a must. More funding in the form of scholarships and grants (not loans, which just disadvantage low income students even more) is also needed. A $26,000 annual pay is at the high range for graduate students, but most graduate students make way less. Having tuition covered is helpful for those who are lucky to get a GA/RA/TA position, but it doesn’t cover fees. Covering health insurance in the GA/RA/TA plans does nothing if low income students can’t even use the Student Blue (BCBS) insurance plan because of the co-pays and cost share. Many graduate students are too busy worrying about if they can make rent, buy groceries, stay on needed medications, etc., this does not promote mental wellness at all. If the graduate school is serious about promoting good mental health, then sitting down and seriously looking at the financial needs of graduate students must be done. Many research studies support statistics that graduate students suffer from higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide rates than undergraduate students. However, graduate students have the least support. There have been several suicides from NCSU graduate students this academic year alone, however they aren’t reported by NC State because most graduate students live off campus, and suicides off campus (that are not within a NCSU affiliated living area) are not reported the majority of the time. Please help us for real, we are suffering in silence.
Moharnab Saikia: Very nice people here who are very friendly and try to solve any problems you have relating to your graduate school documents.
Lei Wang: Go pack!
