Personal interaction with faculty helped international student Mwende Mumo, ’23, identify the right majors that would capitalize on her math and problem-solving strengths. With her majors in mathematics and economics, she is well-prepared for her future career in data science.

Itzel Zuniga, ’23, came to Meredith as a dual-enrolled student, having attended Bladen Community College. As an interior design major at Meredith, she has built a strong community of friends and colleagues who have helped her succeed.

Two Meredith College teams participated in DataFest at NC State this spring, with both teams earning awards. DataFest is an event sponsored by the American Statistical Association and held at schools around the country each spring. The event lasts from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, while undergraduate teams compete to explore and analyze a secret data set provided by an anonymous client. Teams share insights in a brief presentation at the end of the event.

After conducting a national search, Meredith College has named Dr. Shannon M. Yates as its next athletic director. Dr. Yates comes to Meredith after serving 26 years in athletic administration including three Division I universities and an N.C. community college.

Meredith College will hold Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2023 on Saturday, May 13, in the Courtyard behind Johnson Hall. Ceremonies will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The Colton Review, Meredith College’s art and literary journal that features work from students, faculty, staff, and alumnae and is produced for and by students, was unveiled on Celebrating Student Achievement Day.

In philosophy, our students confront a wide range of issues through historical and contemporary resources. Topics covered include the nature of knowledge and reality, the relationship between the mind and brain, the possibility of free will, the ethical implications of scientific advances and the justification of moral, political and legal institutions.

In religious studies, our students investigate all aspects of religion and its impact on human affairs; and they examine various interpretations of religion, including religion as a social construction, as a psychological phenomenon, as a form of metaphysics and as a constellation of ritual practices.

Associate professor of philosophy and science, technology and society Veljko Dubljevic answers questions about a book he co-edited about devices that allow computers to interface with the human brain. As these technologies become more widespread, so do questions related to ethics and policy.

Northwestern Scholar Gives Public Lecture on the Boundary between the Religious and the Secular

On April 13, Elizabeth Shakman Hurd of Northwestern University presented NC State’s annual Impact of Religion Lecture.

The NC State Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies recognized the academic achievements of Sophie Korenek, a top senior in philosophy, at its Student Awards Reception on March 9.

The capacity to think critically is the single most valuable tool I have.

While NC State doesn’t offer graduate degrees in philosophy or religious studies, we do provide several opportunities for advanced study. These include our graduate minor in cognitive science and several graduate courses in logic, philosophy and religious studies that pair well with many degree programs.
