Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy of Raleigh: what do users think?
Jake Donovan: Started here about 4 weeks ago. I have been taking Jiu Jitsu and Judo. Instructors are great in both Jiu Jitsu and Judo. There are plenty of classes offered during the week for Jiu Jitsu and twice for Judo. Everyone is very friendly and it feels like a large family. I have had a ton of fun taking classes at Royce Gracie in Raleigh.
Ranbir Bakhshi: I have been training here for a couple of months and have been learning more and more each week.Billy does an awesome job teaching Jiu Jitsu, very knowledgable and has a great sense of humor. Doesn't make you feel uncomfortable when asking questions.Great group and culture at this gym!
Elias Everett: Top level academy. Very clean and professional. Billy is a very knowledgeable, welcoming instructor.
Michael Cote: I started about 6 months ago and I've both really liked it and feel as if I've improved a lot. I've only done the jiu jitsu classes because it best fits my schedule but you can take advantage of judo, kick boxing, etc as well. My son goes to the kid classes and loves it. Both the adult and the kid coaches are really good. I go to both the morning (6 AM classes) and the afternoon/night classes and the instruction is excellent in each one. Coaches will definitely take time to answer questions and make sure you understand and are doing things correctly. I've also never felt like the place is unsafe. Everyone is incredibly nice, willing to answer questions, and no one is trying to crank out moves.
Chuck Chapa: Billy and Patches are awesome! Excellent facility, training, coaching, and staff. My daughter and I love to and are proud to train at the Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy Of Raleigh!
Chris Edl: I can't say enough good things about this academy. It's a legit facility with a great staff and the teachers are top-notch. The cool thing is a membership doesn't limit you to just Jiu Jitsu; you can also do kickboxing and judo. So with that said, I've definitely been getting my money's worth going up and doing what's available, whenever I can. Give it a shot and see if it's for you too.
Ken Schult: Excellent Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym; coaches are knowledgeable and supportive, with an overall positive approach to this martial art. I've been taking my grandson here for more than a year, after one of my sons, who also trains at RGJJ, recommended it. They have great kids classes and a clean & hygienic environment. Highly recommended.
Michael Bennett: What I can’t believe is real is the fact that they offer Gracie BJJ, Judo, and Muay Thai kickboxing. 3 separate programs, all included in your membership, and they all flow together well. The instructors for each are very high quality. Just how they don’t just “hand out” stripes and belts, I don’t just hand out 5 star reviews. I’ve been looking for the right place to train, and this is it for sure.
Brad Rogerson: Started here about 2 months ago as a fresh white belt. After having been an athlete my whole life and never trying Jiu Jitsu...I'm glad I choose this as the start to my journey.I have done free classes at other gyms and they are all great, but this one seemed to fit a style I liked."Patches" who runs the front desk made me feel at home immediately and gave me a rad team mom kinda vibe. She also did a great job educating me on how things work to make sure I was comfortable there.Other places I have been did not have such a dialed in structure and focus on their students the way I have experienced.I can only speak for lower experienced students... But the beginner classes I'm going to, everyone is have a really good time. I am meeting lots of cool new people and learning faster than I would have thought.I would say if you want to try it out...Don't be shy, enjoy the experience of being new, the more advanced girls and guys are super supportive in helping to new crowd!
Roma Sushyk: Almost first month in, great space, solid instructor, awesome atmosphere.Highly recommend.
Sean Witty: Been there four months w/ my son and love it. Instructors help each person with what they want to learn and respect everyone's goals. It's not a belt factory, nor is there an emphasis on testing - you get out what you put in. Billy (and others) always take time to answer questions, explain, and give individual attention. Kids program is fantastic - teachers push the kids at a good pace and get them comfortable with each step. My son has TONS more confidence and ability than when he walked in. 100% great experience!
Giovanni Ford: Been away from the area, due to work schedule! Came by the gym and it felt like I never left! Awesome atmosphere and instruction!
Frank Shaw: 10/10, such a welcoming and positive place. Staff and students are awesome all around
Eric Moran: Amazing instructors! Great energy. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a real mixed martial arts experience
Joe Miller: The coaches are friendly, very encouraging and do a great job to give special attention to all of the students. From Peaches (mascot) upon entry, to Patches remembering EVERYONE’S name, they make you feel welcome. The instruction is structured and works to advance the students and build confidence.
Vicky Wang: Positive:Communication,ProfessionalismMy boy is 8 and has no material art experience before, we just started it last month. As we just came back from the class tonight, he is not scared to defend himself anymore. I definitely see the improvement!
Rabih Richa: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,Value
Steven Fowler: Every facet of my experience here has been excellent. The instructors are top-notch and everyone is helpful. Fellow, more experienced students want you to succeed and learn how to get better. Can't recommend enough.
Mustafa oudeh: Absolutely love this gym! Everyone is so kind and they care about their students. Billy is a great teacher. Thank you
Alex Davis: I have been training here for a little over 5 years and it is truly one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I'll tell anyone who asks that I came for the Jiu Jitsu and I stayed for the people. You will not find higher caliber people anywhere else, nor will you find a group of people and instructors who are as invested in your success, not only jiu jitsu but also in life, as the people at Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy of Raleigh. If you're thinking about joining or trying it out, don't waste another minute and just show up, you won't regret it.
Jason O'Briant: We enrolled our son in the kids class 6 months ago and the speed of his progress is really staggering. The majority of the credit must go to Rashaun the lead kids' coach. He has a special talent communicating with children and getting the most effort out of them. He both challenges and pushes them. I find his approach very refreshing. I've witnessed tremendous changes in all the other students in the class as well.Billy, the owner, his partner, and Peaches (gym dog) are always there to welcome you, chat about the day, and sets the tone and culture of the school through his leadership. Oh, and back to Peaches...Billy rescued her, and there should be a whole separate post here about Peaches!Despite being in a building with any number of highly trained and skilled martial artist, it's one of the most friendly environments for learning and exploring personal growth. But, please don't conflate friendly with easy. The kids are working, and it's not always easy, but they're learning how to defend themselves. It's a challenging endeavor that few actually know how to do. Kids here certainly will.

Gracie Raleigh: what do users think?
Gavin Gaspar: I was in town for business looking for a place to train. The academy was great. The jujitsu was technical and everyone was friendly. I highly recommend training there. I look forward to stopping by again. JLG
Paige Farley: My sister and I took a self-defense class with Karl at Gracie Raleigh, and it was incredibly useful, engaging, informative, and helpful. Karl was extremely communicative, knowledgeable, kind, and exceeded our expectations beyond measure. He taught us so much and made us feel so comfortable. You could tell that he truly cares about what he does, and he went above and beyond to make our experience a helpful and positive one. We can’t thank you enough!
Amir McClain: I stared to attend classes about a month ago when my Uncle recommended I come and it has been an amazing experience for sure. All the coaches are amazing and work with you one whatever you need help on or want to work on. I would definitely recommend coming and joining this great program and team! You will not only have a great time but will see results!
Jeff Brinkman: I had the opportunity to drop in tonight. It’s a great facility, with a welcoming environment. The instructions was top notch, breaking down techniques to make them applicable for upper level belts but keeping them simple enough for the white belts to become comfortable with them.I’ll definitely be stopping in the next time I’m in town.
Dan Almond: Gracie Raleigh is a great place to learn. The community they have established is very welcoming and the instructors are awesome. If you are looking for a place to get started on your path in learning BJJ, I would highly recommend it.
Jessica Sullivan: Can’t say enough good things about this gym. My 8 year old son takes Brazilian jiujitsu and the coaches are second to none. The energy coach Thom brings in the room keeps everyone so engaged and excited to be there. Not only that but they take a real interest in the kids and train them not just for bjj but for life. They teach them they are leaders in their community and “10 ft tall” They command respect and teach discipline with a firm hand but also so kind and caring at the same time. Greyson, Karl and Thom are treasures and my kids a better person from training with them.
Colin Kiser: I'd been waiting to train BJJ for years, and finally pulled the trigger at Gracie Raleigh 2 months ago, along with my 7 yr old son. Though the gym has many positives, I've specifically enjoyed the overall culture or learning, support, and friendliness (particularly towards newbies). This is key when you're choking one another out... I feel comfortable and excited to go to class every time. The gym is welcoming, safe for kids, and CLEAN. The new location is baller. Props to the team.
Noah Pope: Welcoming environment. Knowledgeable instructors. Highly recommend.
Donald Dickey: Great workout for Muay Thai!
Alan Grubner: feel lucky i had the chance to drop in for the trial kickboxing class. this place is awesome. really appreciated the vibe & instruction. if i lived here, i’d join up for sure! big thx!
Thomas Garner: I've really enjoyed my experience so far at Gracie Raleigh. The coaches are all very respectful, knowledgeable and passionate. I was truly amazed at the level of detail in every instructional. My confidence as a person and as someone who can defend myself and my family has really grown since attending. The gym is kept clean and things are always in order. Everyone at the gym has been friendly and welcoming. They're building a beautiful new gym down the road, which will be opening soon. Gracie Raleigh is top notch!
Philip Lester: Just started coming here a few weeks ago. Great experience so far and overall the staff has been super helpful/welcoming. Members have a wide range of skill levels making it great to find sparring partners. Kicking pads while listening to 90s hip hop has definitely been the highlight so far.
Luis Lopez: Started at Gracie in 2017 and attended thru 2019 I'm looking forward to going back. The coaches are awesome, the people is great and always willing to help. If you want an environment where you feel welcome every time you step thru the door this is the place. Hope to start over this 2022!
Michael Raimo: Had a great time at Gracie Raleigh this past Saturday. I hadn't done Jiu-Jitsu in over 4 years and everyone was welcoming and respectful. Had a great workout and was able to refresh some old skills. Really recommend this gym to anyone who is looking to get into BJJ.
Steve Sieminkewicz: I’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu here for a couple months now and am very much enjoying my training. The coaches I’m learning from, the other students, and the gym culture are all great. There is so much to learn and I am always looking forward to the next class!
Alexander Gray: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueStarted coming to BJJ classes a month ago. Have done about ten classes so far. Love everything about the way the gym operates. The instructors remember the students even though every class is 30+ people. If you want to learn in a comfortable but structured environment from top quality coaches look no further.
Patrick Doyle: Positive:QualityAwesome gym. Really enjoyed training here. Instructors are all very high quality and it's a friendly atmosphere with some great people.
Will Reuther: After moving to NC and researching different schools in the area I landed on Gracie Raleigh, and I’m really happy I did. It’s a place where I know I can always come to focus and learn. The instructors here pull from real world experience and competition, and they know how to break down Jiu jitsu into bite sized pieces. I think the best part of this group is that you can train at whatever level you want. If you want to be competitive you can find that here, if you want to focus on your fitness or if you‘re just starting and want to try it out, you will find people that are interested in the same thing and on the same level as you. It’s an all around welcoming environment. They also have an awesome kids program here. It’s really cool to see a school that genuinely enjoys teaching younger kids about grappling/jiu Jitsu, and the parents are excited about it too.Hopefully this helps, I would definitely recommend this place!
Heather Marks: The youth program here is wonderful!
Ethan Williams: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI love training here! The atmosphere is always friendly and the variety of classes and people is sure to help with all aspects of combat sports and self defense. if your ever wanting to learn a new skill, meet great people, and get in shape i definitely recommend Gracie Raleigh.
Vytautas Smetona: Gracie fundamental classes are very beginner friendly and the coaches are very knowledgeable. Classes have a good mix of self defense techniques and sport Jiu jitsu.

Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts: what do users think?
Lisa Killion: My son enjoyed his week of summer camp so much! He said the coaches were so helpful and friendly. He demonstrated some of his new skills to me and I can attest that he learned a lot!
Vern Jensen: Great club with awesome people and instruction. Thank you.
Jesse S.: Always friendly and professional. I signed my son up for their kids BJJ courses.
Jessica Donahue: Love them!
Jared Ream: They are super personable, and you can tell they care about every student. The awesome instructors and Ms Sue at the desk knew the name of everyone who walked through the door. I checked out classes before moving to the area, and I was very impressed!
Eric Hardin: PAMA has been a great place for me. I’ve been training here almost a year. I’ve trained at three other Raleigh gyms over the last 12 years and PAMA is by far my best experience. Rob and Guy keep up with bjj trends and teach modern sport-oriented bjj although there are self-defense oriented classes too if that’s your motivation. They have no gi classes too. They’re funny and play good music too, not that that’s why you choose a gym but it helps. The facilities are nice and clean. The culture is friendly. The club size is good - it’s big enough that you get a diversity of training partners but small enough that your instructors know you. There are several classes a day/week so it’s easy to find a time that works even when my schedule changes. They’re very good with the business side of things too. For example, they have auto payment options, they have an app with a lot of their own content, they have a gear store, they have a lot of events for kids and the community, and their communication is great. They always keep you informed of what’s going on via email and text. They’ll even text you if you don’t show up for a while and send you a card on your birthday, which is just above and beyond. There’s no drama or weird uncertainty that you get at some gyms. I only have good things to say.
Stephen Vignere: Visiting family, and came across PAMA and a few others. After a few phone calls, I decided to stick here when here to see family, and it’s a great place! Very clean and organized with great instruction. No easy rolls, but no crazy egos. Great place!
Grant Radding: Best place to learn jujitsu and Muay Thai. I have been going here for a few months now and have learned so much. The gym is great for Both experienced practitioners and Beginners. The staff is very friendly and does an amazing job catering to everyone’s needs. PAMA is honestly one of the best gyms in the triangle.
Lana Davis: Our son loves PAMA and it has helped him in so many ways including his confidence and discipline! The best part of PAMA and it’s not just a place you take your kid to learn jijitsu, it’s a family! ❤️
Christian Coody: Been training here for over 6 months and have been very happy. Good people, good classes/instruction, and good vibes.
Jennifer Carr: Pama has been amazing since our kids (and husband) joined in Jan 2022. The grit my boys have been able to learn here has been exactly what was needed and didn’t have other options to teach them this grit while learning such confidence in themselves at the same time! The staff is great and the community work that Pama does is icing on the cake! Can’t wait for years of partnership with Pama!!
Julia Benson: PAMA is like family! My 5 year old and me both train at PAMA. I have been training here for 2 years in advanced Muay Thai class. My coach is great. He is teaching creative combinations. I have improved my skills a lot and started participate in competitions. My 5 year old daughter is in the kids Jiu Jitsu class. Her coach is awesome too. They play games to warm up, then all kids learn positions, and they play again. After class we pick up donuts at DunkinDonuts around the corner. PAMA has in-house kids tournaments and seasonal festivities for the kids. At PAMA every one is friendly, polite and respectful. It’s just a pleasure to come here.
J C: We can’t say enough good things about this place. My son Cooper has thrived here, and the owners and staff have been amazing every step of the way. Shout out to Sue! She’s amazing and Professor Boo and Professors Guy and Rob- thank you all!!
Dennis Tran: Great facility and atmosphere for adults and children to learn. Excellent caring staff with high quality teaching skills. I highly recommend PAMA for families or individual wanting to learn BJJ and Muay Thai.
Jessica Blair: Pama has been such a blessing for our 2 kids. They both love the instructors and the classes have given my daughter something to be proud of and her confidence is still growing
Michael Hosmer: Skilled, friendly, and professional team that understands how to train to get the most out of each session, level, and age group.
Erran Schloss: Great Professors (instructors), very welcoming atmosphere
Sheri McReynolds: My boys love the Mauy Thai classes at PAMA! Everyone there is just awesome!!
Whitney Schloss: Pendergrass isn’t just where my son trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it’s our family and our second home! Thankful for Guy, Rob, Boo, Sue, and Casey for welcoming us into their BJJ home on a daily basis!! The training part is the bonus!! We love our PAMA family!!🖤❤️
Allen Hamouch: Pama is great. Higher belts take the time to teach. The classes have a good flow and the staff is prideful in their work. It's really good exercise and you always leave class feeling better. For those thinking you can't do this, I had to step out and throw up my first few classes. You can do it.
Amanda Simpson: Pendergrass Academy is a great place for the whole family. Our kids love the fun and engaging classes. The adult classes are full of supportive training partners and fantastic instructors.

Justin Boyes: Great place to learn and train
Sid Singh: Great place! Coaches are knowledgeable, and everyone is super friendly there! Definitely recommended!
Ozella Bowman: Fantastic teachers and very kind staff! John is raw but professional and you can tell he knows his stuff! The teachers are extremely energetic and patient particularly when dealing with the younger kids, but they still keep things orderly and disciplined...vs other places where the instructors can't keep a handle on the kids. A great experience all around and highly recommended!
Michael Vaught: A very welcoming environment. I spoke with the owner who was very polite and knowledgeable. Also throughly explained different types of martial arts classes the gym offers. I highly recommend this gym. The instructors are extremely friendly and helpful.

Professor Tricoli has taught me so much in the few months that I have been here. He has pushed me and helped me continue to grow. I look forward to learning more.
Sabrina Bradley: Great people and Great place
Andrew Bohn: Positive:Communication,Quality,ValueRIMA is awesome! The masters have a wealth of knowledge and know how to teach it to you. It feels like a family. A family that fights and sweats and learns to break each others bones, but a family :-)
Calvin Harris: Nice environment and the staff is very professional. Great work out space and I love the basketball court. Excellent way to lose weight and burn lots of calories. Instructors are patient and make sure you learn the proper techniques. I also like the hours of operation. You should check it out!
Sami Farmer: Some teachers are cool. I liked the kick boxing class because it‘s fun. Instructors are hit or miss. It’s also pricey.
Jeannien Engelbrecht: Great facility and ownership! We enjoyed our first trial as a family and looking forward to our return! This club offers classes for all ages!!
Bryan Adams: Love this place!Everyone is super welcoming and helpful. Professor Tricoli is awesome and his expertise is very broad and deep across many martial arts. Several other high ranking veterans yo provide guidance as well.New location is great too.
MaryAnn I: Pros: The kickboxing instructors were pretty good. I had a lot of fun during some classes. Pricing is ok & schedule is convenient. Cons: Unprofessionalism about my being out of shape from staff and members. I hated the “special attention,” unsolicited weight loss tips, & laughs that I got during the 2 months that I went to RIMA, averaging 5 days a week. Lastly, I didn't appreciate being grilled when I canceled my membership.
MaryFaye Dodson: Awesome people awesome place highly recommend
Greg Martinez: Great place!
Tyler Ingram: Those men are experts and they can teach anyone how to be a professional fighter
Eronger Kornegay: We are all entitled to our own opinions, right? Well here's mine:Parking: 5Location: 5Decor/ambiance: 5Customer Service: 5+RIMA Martial Arts is the place to be if you are seeking instructional coaching in fitness kickboxing! Hometown MMA: what do users think?
Bien Siao: I’ve been going to this gym for about 3 months now and I have to say it is one of the best MMA gyms in the RDU. They offer a variety of classes such as full contact Karate, Grappling (wrestling and jiu jitsu), Boxing, and Muay Thai. The instructors are knowledgeable, and you can tell they really care about their craft (shout out to Dylan, Hunter, and Tyler). Although the gym is relatively small, the ambience makes up for it; the artwork inside the gym is like no other and gives the gym a super homey vibe. The students are also pretty cool people who just want to learn some martial arts, and you will see most students trying to help their teammates become better. Trevor and Talia (the owners) are good people and you can really feel the hard work they put in this gym, as they built this place from the ground up. I highly recommend this gym.
Nick Keller: This is for sure the best gym in the area for striking. The atmosphere and vibe is great and everyone is understanding and supportive of each other. I've made some good friends here while training the sport I love. Trevor is also an amazing coach 3
Chris: Just low kicked my gyms heavy bag so hard that the bag broke. Thanks Trevor!
Shawn M.: I’m super impressed with this gym. It’s a hidden gym in the North Raleigh area. It’s not a “traditional” gym with anything fancy, it’s a “I’m here to learn technique and perfect my martial arts” gym. Head trainer Trevor is vastly knowledgeable on the fine details of MMA. Students here excel very fast because the classes are so drilling/technique focused on real combat. I was a out of towner visiting and I 100% will be coming back here to train!
Haley VanStaalduinen: Literally my second time posting, but I felt another review was in order. Hometown has been expanding it's variety of classes and I can't leave out Hunter and his Kyokushin karate classes on Sundays! He is an awesome coach and does a great job with all skill levels and backgrounds. I am really blown away with how much I've improved not just in this particular class, but with how much applies to Muay Thai as well! (Shoutout to Jillian who is often in these classes and helps out with training as well. Insanely talented!)
Caleigh Tyler: If you are like me, and never done Muay Thai, you are reading these reviews and probably wondering what it would actually be like to walk into this gym. There’s a lot of intimidation walking into a gym not knowing what to expect. Looking back I realized how misguided it was of me to feel that way. This place is amazing. Everyone here is so welcoming and supportive. Trevor and Hunter are amazing instructors who want to see you succeed. They take the time to make sure everyone understands what is being taught. They make a group class feel like an individual session and you will leave with an understanding of what you learned. The instructors here are able to work with anyone from greenest of newcomers to people who have been training for years. The culture of the gym, technical knowledge learned, and experience will make an hour feel like a minute. I never thought I would find a gym I couldn’t wait to go back to!
Vincent Moreau: Great gym with friendly spirit, perfect place to get your level up !
Matt Ama: I was told about Hometown by the NCSU Boxing and Kickboxing club. The coaches are super knowledge and everyone at the gym is respectful when it comes to skill level and experience. There is a wide range of combat sports represented at the gym and because of that you can learn something new from just about anyone. I had a great time there and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested
Timothy kelly: After many years of martial arts.. military combatives..and LEO defensive tactics training I have finally found a "home"! Absolutely the BEST instruction I have ever received! There is a wonderful educational "vibe" at Hometown that exists no where else in Raleigh. There are NO "ego's" ..NO arrogant attitudes..NO Gi's just great people and willingness to teach
Patrick Nuttle: So I drive from Fayetteville NC too attend these classes when I can, so thats how awesome this place is.Great coachesGreat team matesGreat supportMost of all great morale
Steele D: I’ve had a great experience training at hometown martial arts. Trevor is a great coach and a good dude, good group of people to train with too. I came here with some muay thai experience but I’d definitely recommend it to anyone just starting out as well as people with a martial arts background
Job Albarr: Great instructors with very practical Muay Thai classes.
Al Westerband: Great coaching and members overall. Trevor explains things in a way that’s easy to understand and makes the classes a lot of fun.
Joshua McLeod: There arent enough good things i can say about this place, top to bottom its the best.
Danielle Lopez: World class training! Trevor and Talia have the perfect blend of home comforts and excellent muay thai training. Our daughters love coming here and appreciate the quality of training that's comfortable for all ages and skill levels but advanced enough to challenge them
Tyler Cook: One of the best gyms I’ve been to in this area. The technique in classes is always solid, and everyone there feels like family. Good option for beginners looking to learn how to fight, people who only want a good technique based workout, and for more experienced fighters who train to compete.
Randy me: Head coach Trevor and the rest of the team are not only incredible coaches full of endless knowledge but amazing people as well. I’ve learned so much while training at hometown but at the same time feel like I have a second family. I would recommend hometown to anyone from beginners that have never stepped foot in a gym all the way to experienced professionals looking for a coach that will help them grow as a martial artist.
Charlie Ji: Best mma gym to learn striking. Different from many gyms I have been to. Trevor actually teaches and corrects. A lot of places just teach combinations and not how to actually apply striking. Goes very in depth in footwork, drill work, as well as pad work. Teaches you how to get comfortable. And you actually use what you learn. They also don’t play favorites and give everyone equal attention and pulls people aside to teach them while they drill. You won’t see them staying with only one person. Doesn’t matter if you actually fight or if you are doing it as a hobby. He will teach you martial arts the same way he teaches his fighters.Don’t be afraid it really is for all levels. No one pressures you to spar and everyone is friendly. They also have a very healthy gym culture when they tech spar they understand that it’s about technique not giving someone a concussion. Trevor is also very good at calling people out and if people go hard it’s definitely both parties who agree to it and it’s never anger or emotional. They always show respect.Give this gym a try!
Ben Brown: I searched for quite some time to find a place to learn Muay Thai/Kickboxing. I finally decided to try Hometown Martial Arts because of the head coach, Trevor Hayes. And I am very happy that I did.I've been training here for about 6 weeks so I'm doing this review as a beginner. With that said, Trevor is an excellent coach and everyone I've met at Hometown has been super friendly and welcoming. If you are a beginner like me, this is a great place to start. Trevor is very patient but he will also push you to continue to improve. If you're experienced, you will several very skilled fighters here as well.In short, Hometown Martial Arts is a great place to train!
Katie Weiss: My daughters, age 6 and 8, and I have been working with Trevor and Talia for 6 months now and my progress and experience has been phenomenal. Trevor works hard to adapt and challenge me as we work around my cerebral palsy. It may slow me down or make me fall more than “normal” but we just keep going! I look forward to every session! My daughters enjoy their classes and are gaining strength, coordination, flexibility, and self confidence! What more could a parent ask for??
Trey Sturgeon: Trevor and Talia did a great job making us feel at home at their new gym!! Very excited for this program and to see where it goes

G13 BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU HQ US: Martial Arts | Self-Defense | Strength Conditioning | Kids | NoGi: what do users think?
Daniel Therriault: This gym is amazing! We were only in Raleigh for 10 months and we learned so much under the teaching of Master Godoi and his team. From the start, we were welcomed into the G13 family. It is truly a family. People are friendly, respectful and encourage each other to constantly get better. Master Godoi often tells inspirational stories and he knows the names of each of his many students. There are students of all levels from beginner to very advanced and there are many classes available to accommodate everyone’s needs. The warmup exercises are really fun and there are many opportunities for rolling with good music in the background. The gym is bright and always very clean. Fabiana at the front desk is very helpful and resourceful. She was always available to answer all of our questions. We love this gym. We learned so much in our short time there and we were sad that we had to leave.
Antonio P: Godoi and his family have just received me as an instantly family member!I've been out of tatami for many, many years and felt just home training with them.Detailed information is passed every time with very care which makes the sessions fantastic!G13 is the perfect school if you want a top notch jiu-jitsu with a fantastic team!!!
Sierra Collom: Visited a class here today as a guest from Oregon and I was incredibly impressed! Roberto was very friendly and welcoming, as were all of his students. The class was fundamentals and was very well run and I learned a ton in the hour. Rolled with multiple belt levels and they were all top notch! All of the students raved about Roberto and his gym and I can see why. Super super aweseome experience and if I lived here I would be training at G13 for certain. Thank you Roberto and thank you to all the folks I met!
Michael Whitley: I'm been training for a little over a month now and love it. It is humbling but so satisfying every morning after class. The instructors are fantastic and create a welcoming environment for people regardless of their BJJ skill level.
Tony Grant: Visited the facility yesterday from out of town, Professor Godoi was on site and taught the class. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend this place to a friend or family member in the area. Students and staff were very friendly!
Blanca Patrick: Great gym, great people! Enrolling my 3 and 5 yo kids is one of the best decisions I have made! The kids enjoy the challenge and become more confident, disciplined, and strong with each class. The coaches are phenomenal, the gym is comfortable and clean, and it’s a wonderful community. We have made some good friends. Thank you, Master Godoi and team!
Brett Garrison: My 5 year old son started at G13 a year ago this month! Everything about this school is top tier! Coach Matt, Coach Moe, Coach Antonio and Professor Godoi have been amazing mentors to my son and his personal growth since starting has been exceptional! We truly feel like family here. Kids classes are fun, motivating, and each coach takes the time to individually teach technique! Best Gym in the Triangle area! HIGHLY recommend!
Ethan Caldwell: My son and daughter have been training here for around 7 months - amazing experience at every step. The people are awesome, great at working with kids and I know they are learning a lot. Couldn’t recommend any higher!
Kelly Peirson: Initially joined out of peer pressure from our neighbors and ended up being the best decision for our whining, only child. The kids class and Coach Matthew has been amazing for reinforcing self-discipline and mindfulness. This has also been a great community full of team building activities for our kid and great source of physical activity for this gamer. The kids class has been a fun alternative to video gaming for a group of boys in our neighborhood-so glad their trying new experiences and doing some self care too! The Godoi family is amazing and Professor Godoi is a top-knotch competitor in the world. Love that the kids are able to have this learning experience from such a Jujitsu expert from Brazil 🇧🇷 right here in Cary! You won't be disappointed!
Marcelo Galvao: Roberto Godoi is an icon of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I'm very happy to have him as my master. In the 30 years that I've been doing jiu-jitsu, I've met several masters who are also renowned, but none as great as master Roberto Godoi. I’m Brazilian, 5th Black Belt in BJJ, and I have lived here, in the US, for more than seven years and I’ve never found an academy that had the level of teaching and commitment of G13. I’m so happy to know that G13 has come to America, and master Roberto Godoi is here disseminating his knowledge, building great fighters and above all great human beings. Today I live in Florida but whenever I can, I try to go to North Carolina to learn a little more of the gentle art with my great friend and Master Roberto Godoi.
Daniel Pinheiro: The Best in Business, I’m highly recommend it if you are in town.Osss
Anthony Rodriguez: Professor Roberto Godoi is a master class in teaching and providing his students with challenges and guiding them towards success. I am very fortunate to be his student and everyone within this gym are really great people. I highly recommend this gym to anyone that wants to do Jiu Jitsu. You will not be disappointed and Professor Godoi will help you become a better person.
Carlos Sibello: Excellent training, great team mates and a very welcoming atmosphere. Makes G13, in my opinion, the best BJJ Academy in the area.
Huntley Hughes: If you live in the triangle area this is 100% the best choice you could make to improve your grappling AND find a community - give it a try and find out!
Igor Luiz de Sousa Santos: Great Team! Awsome class.
Fábio Santana: There is a great place to learn and practice Jiu Jitsu. Friendly teammates, skilled instructors, and time flexibility make that place the best one for me!
flavio souza: Great jiu-jitsu school where champions are formed from beginning to advanced
Jonah Pollone: When I moved to Raleigh to be closer to downtown, I had to find a new Jiu Jitsu school because the commute to my old school was too long. I was quite nervous, as choosing a school is such a personal decision. G13 was the obvious choice for me after visiting three other schools throughout the Triangle area and receiving recommendations from previous training partners and coaches. For context- I’m a white belt and have been training since March of 2021. I practice jiu jitsu mostly with the Gi on and choose to focus on Godoi’s fundamental class in the evenings, although I’ve tried out the morning classes and No Gi classes and loved them both. When I set out on my search, I was looking for 3 main things out of a school: high quality instruction, great community, and class times that worked with my busy work schedule. This school offers all three, and so much more…High quality instruction: The school’s founder, Professor Roberto Godoi, is a legend. He received his black belt in 1996 and has an insane amount of knowledge. If you ask for help on a technique, he’ll ask you to demonstrate the technique you are working on, and he’ll know exactly what’s wrong and give you advice on what to do instead. He has a great mind for jiu jitsu and is a helpful teacher.Rather than teaching random techniques that have seemingly no connection to one another, the school offers lessons that repeat and follow a structure. Professor Godoi typically teaches a flow of techniques on Monday, expanding upon it throughout the week, and reviewing it on Saturday. This makes the material much more digestible and helps me learn.Great community: I’ve been to this school for 10 months and have been welcomed in with open arms. G13 truly is a family environment. We have cookouts and gatherings at the school and students’ houses. Every year the school hosts a belt ceremony here and also a camp in Brazil that you can attend which lasts a week.Good class times: I often work long hours and might miss a day during the week due to last-minute travel for closings and investor meetings. G13 offers classes after my work schedule in the evenings and early in the morning for folks who can get up for 6AM class. 😃At the time of writing this review, there are four main instructors at the school: Roberto Godoi (Gi Fundamental and Advanced), John Telford (Gi Fundamental), Sean Zorio (Gi Fundamental), and Cheyne Kulessa (No Gi). They teach at different times and have a schedule on the website. We use the G13 app to manage check-ins, which helps the professors understand who is ready for a belt/stripe promotion. At the end of every class we roll with 5 minute rounds. This is a great time to practice the moves of the day or anything you’re working on. All of the upper belts I’ve rolled with tend to match your intensity level and care for your safety. This school focuses on sport jiu jitsu (as opposed to self defense curriculum, although many of what you learn here will also apply in real life). Godoi encourages you to compete (and will support you greatly), but by no means forces it on to anyone. There are many at the school who only train at G13 and don’t care about competing, and they’re treated the same as everyone else. The school also has a GREAT program for women. There’s a lot of them and they’re very supportive of one another. Clean mats and facility. The worst thing about this place is the more you go, the more you’ll want to go!
Brandon Corrales: G13 BJJ provides an ironclad jiu jitsu curriculum for athletes, hobbyists and kids alike. If you seek tried and true applications of this martial art in your game, this school is for you. Truly the best martial arts school the Triangle has to offer, no question.
Cliff Pyles: My 9 year old son and 6 year old daughter both takes classes here and both love it! The instructors are motivated and very involved with the children. The instructors make sure the kids are learning, staying engaged, and having fun. Both of my kids have grown in their self confidence and self discipline while training here. I would highly recommend giving it a try!
Dan: Great friendly family atmosphere. Kids class was engaging and fun with games and teaching one on one. G13 is the next-level school.
