Have you ever driven by an unfamiliar lodge building in your travels and, based on outward appearances, found yourself questioning whether the lodge is still active? Regardless of the perceived problem (finances, membership numbers, participation, lodge culture, etc.), apathy is the cause … and it can be a lodge killer if the source is not identified and addressed.

None of us want to see a lodge fail and yet we have 434 lodges that have gone inactive since our Grand Lodge was formed.

I would like to thank the Supreme Architect of the universe for bringing us here today and to thank the ones that have enabled me to be here this afternoon. At the very top of the list would be my Life Amy. She has been my source of support and inspiration through the years. I am humbled to stand before you today and to have the honor and privilege to serve as master of our lodge for the year 2022. Over the last several weeks I sometimes wondered what brought me to this point in my life and after much thought and introspect I found that I was following my own moral compass of my inner thoughts, achievements, and goals. I also found Chris Lee who has been a true brother in a time of need, and I am honored to be able to have Chris install me today as Master of our lodge. I found Jimmie Lassiter who has been a rudder in my masonic journey and has always been steady and even tempered. I extend my gratitude and thanks to you both for your continued guidance, support and mentoring. I would be remiss not to honor and pay tribute to the guidance and leadership of Worshipful Allen Bonner Jr. who was my mentor and coach. Each one always thoughtful and only wanted what was best for our lodge and fraternity. I would like to thank my 2022 officers who have stepped up to the task and share a common goal for this year. I want to thank all the brothers of this lodge for placing their trust in me to lead this lodge in 2022.

To bring out the 'why' of masonry thereby making James B Green Lodge a better place to be associated with, a better place for its brothers and families to spend time attending meetings, special events and banquets and a better community asset.

Why are we here? Why did we choose to become Master Masons? In any leadership speak or motivational type material you will always find an action item that states, 'Find your why'. This coming year my theme is 'Why'. I will be calling on each of the brothers in this lodge to pull out, dust off and revisit the pages of their why. We have a lot of work to do; such as reviving brotherly love, reaching out and assisting brothers and widows who need our attention, Fraternal and Family social events, building relationships in our community. We have many social events on the calendar and we will also share 3-4 joint events with the Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, and our 2 adopted lodges to build the relationship between our three groups. What we have in store will enable us to build a stronger core that will lead us into the future. In closing, I would like to say The Greek philosopher Aristotle tells us that there are three kinds of friendship:

We have friends who make us laugh, whose company we enjoy.

We have friends who are useful to us, who lend things to us, who do things for us that we cannot do well for ourselves.

Finally, we have "friends in the good." This friendship occurs when we are united with others in a common undertaking, which lifts us to another level, giving us a desire to strive for something beyond our own lives. This is the highest form of friendship, and we seek it, because we quite simply become better people for having "friends in the good."

If we will take care that the Masonry practiced in our Lodge is reflective of Aristotle's third kind of friendship, a lot of things that could go wrong will take care of themselves!
