4worldlovers: Our teams of scientist-practitioners address major behavioral and social issues and challenges in today’s world. Their expertise is contributing to advancing knowledge about how individuals are affected by physical, emotional, educational, organizational and community contexts and experiences. The department has an active and dedicated group of scholars, staff, graduate and undergraduate students who are fostering the growth of innovative research, teaching and learning. We have three overarching goals: (1) to advance the science and practice of psychology, (2) to continue integrating psychology in the university’s mission and (3) to prepare the next generation to identify and address the concerns that challenge and inspire them.

Working with a group of NC State faculty, staff and community leaders, Haskett surveyed 7,000 NC State students to assess the extent of food and housing insecurity on campus. The group also evaluated existing support programs and services at NC State and on campuses across the country.

Psychology faculty advance knowledge about how people learn, what motivates our choices, and why and how we can be effective in challenging social barriers to achievement. Research labs focus on families, communities and institutions (senior citizen centers, schools, and universities) to develop and evaluate innovative interventions that promote equity and social justice.

Psychology faculty lead teams of researchers who explore the factors that are associated with health and well-being and that influence how people of all ages understand and experience their lives. This includes our emotional, interpersonal, and physical worlds. Current projects focus on topics such as healthy development across the lifespan, emotional and physical health and well-being, and humanitarian work.

Psychology faculty enhance safety and security within organizations, communities, and at the individual level. Researchers collaborate with industry partners, government organizations, health care agencies, and the non-profit sector. Current projects focus on topics such as national security, law enforcement, mental illness and violence, safety and risk communications, and human-computer interactions.

Personal interaction with faculty helped international student Mwende Mumo, ’23, identify the right majors that would capitalize on her math and problem-solving strengths. With her majors in mathematics and economics, she is well-prepared for her future career in data science.

Itzel Zuniga, ’23, came to Meredith as a dual-enrolled student, having attended Bladen Community College. As an interior design major at Meredith, she has built a strong community of friends and colleagues who have helped her succeed.

Two Meredith College teams participated in DataFest at NC State this spring, with both teams earning awards. DataFest is an event sponsored by the American Statistical Association and held at schools around the country each spring. The event lasts from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, while undergraduate teams compete to explore and analyze a secret data set provided by an anonymous client. Teams share insights in a brief presentation at the end of the event.

After conducting a national search, Meredith College has named Dr. Shannon M. Yates as its next athletic director. Dr. Yates comes to Meredith after serving 26 years in athletic administration including three Division I universities and an N.C. community college.

Meredith College will hold Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2023 on Saturday, May 13, in the Courtyard behind Johnson Hall. Ceremonies will be held at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The Colton Review, Meredith College’s art and literary journal that features work from students, faculty, staff, and alumnae and is produced for and by students, was unveiled on Celebrating Student Achievement Day.

Wake Tech partners with WakeMed and other local health care institutions to provide hands-on clinical training and work-based learning experiences.
