The Cape Fear Center for Inquiry (CFCI) is a public charter school located in Wilmington, NC. As a charter school we are funded by the state of North Carolina and do not charge tuition. We are not a part of New Hanover County School System, but rather function as our own small school system. We have a board of directors that makes policy and hiring decisions. We do not discriminate in admission.

Cape Fear Center for Inquiry is committed to promoting students’ abilities to think and create in personally meaningful ways through an inquiry-based, integrated curriculum in a nurturing and empowering environment.

CFCI will foster academic and social inquiry based learning by enriching the state curriculum. We will facilitate research, communication and action through:

CFCI students will LEARN while at CFCI, SHARE their experiences, and LIVE as empowered, thinkers, learners, inquirers and good people in the world.

Inquiry is a rigorous discovery process driven by curriculum and curiosity that requires exploration, analysis and problem-solving.

At CFCI, we believe that the whole child is more important than any single factor. We recognize physical, intellectual, emotional and social development as integral parts of each child’s growth and learning process.

Congratulations to Nicole Tejada, recipient of WCE’s Exemplary Intern Award (undergraduate program); Sherre Ojeda, recipient of WCE’s Exemplary Intern Award (MAT graduate program); and Paige Antonelli, recipient of the Grace M. UNCW’s Watson College introduced a doctoral program in Educational Leadership in 2007. Now, more than 150 Ed.D. alumni are making an impact in leadership roles across the state and the nation. On February 23, WCE held the first annual Ed.D. Alumni Reunion to bring faculty and graduates together to celebrate their successes and reconnect. Read more >

Caitlin Ryan, associate professor of language and literacy at the Watson College, has received the 2023 Outstanding Elementary Educator in the English Language Arts Award from the National Council of Teachers of English. She was recognized alongside her long-time collaborator, Dr. Jill Hermann-Wilmarth, professor of social foundations at Western Michigan University. The award was announced in March and will be officially presented at the NCTE National Convention in November. Read more >

Jeff Ertzberger, a faculty member and director of technology in the Watson College of Education, is the recipient of the 2022 Robert E. Tyndall Service Award. The award is presented every two years to a non-tenure-track WCE employee in recognition of dedication to teaching, commitment to the college, ability to work well with all constituents and the capacity to lead his or her area in a new direction. WCE’s Master of Science in Instructional Technology program has been ranked 13th in the nation by OnlineMastersDegrees.org. The ranking for best online degrees in Educational Technology is based on factors including affordability, student/faculty ratio and the accessibility of student and career support services. On March 24, the Watson College was pleased to welcome 130 students from 14 area high schools and one community college to the Spring 2023 Future Teacher Conference.
