4worldlovers: The Horticultural Crops Research Station was established in 1947 and is located on a 60- acre tract on Highway 133, six miles north of Wilmington. An additional 50-acre tract on Holly Shelter Road is seven miles northeast of the main station.

Many N.C. State University scientists, including experts in horticulture, plant diseases and genetics conduct research at the Horticultural Crops Research Station at Castle Hayne. Maintaining the agricultural economy requires a great deal of information on efficient ways to produce fruits, vegetables and ornamentals.

Facilities include plant pathology, tissue culture, and fruit quality laboratories, offices, workshops, computerized greenhouses, multiple cold storage facilities, outdoor lath and shade houses, equipment storage facilities and a new state of the art chemical storage and mixing room. The Station also houses a blueberry pack shed with sorting machines and two mechanical harvesters to support blueberries for pest, breeding, food safety, and agronomy research. Onsite weather gathering equipment has been collecting data for the National Weather Service (NWS) and the N.C. State Climate Office of North Carolina for more than 50 years. On August 27, 2002, the NWS honored the station for half-a-century of service. This station is one of sixteen NCDA&CS / NCSU Research Stations reporting weather data around the clock.

4worldlovers: Lewis Nursery and Farms is a third-generation family farm located in Rocky Point, North Carolina approximately 18 miles north of Wilmington, North Carolina. It was started in 1953 by Everette Lewis when he bought his uncle's farm next to the family farm of his parents. Everette grew up... returned to farming after serving his country in the Army, receiving his master’s degree in Plant Pathology from North Carolina State, and working a few years for the University’s extension service. Everette’s only son, Cal Lewis, was inspired by his father and followed in his footsteps by attending North Carolina State University studying horticulture. After gaining experience in similar realms such as soil fumigation, Cal returned home in 1982 to join his father in the family business. Today, Lewis Nursery and Farms is managed by Cal and it’s loyal and capable staff.

Over the past 60 years, Lewis Farms has diversified from growing strawberries and strawberry plants to the added production of blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. Present-day production includes 35 acres of tunnel grown winter strawberries, 140 acres of standard spring strawberries, 400 acres of blueberries, 55 acres of tunnel grown blackberries. We are in the early stage of trials growing tunnel long cane raspberries. In addition to these crops produced for wholesale, Lewis Farms also has seasonal retail locations. The signature location is on Gordon Road in Wilmington, NC which has "pick your own" strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries as well as bedding plants, hanging baskets, and much more. This location also has the famous Lewis Farms homemade ice cream. There is another "pick your own" strawberry farm on Highway 117 in the Wrightsboro - Castle Hayne community near Wilmington, NC. Collectively these two retails farms produce another 10 acres of strawberries, 4 acres of blueberries, and 1 acre of blackberries for pick your own.

The museum complex operates Wednesday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. First tour of the day is at 10 a.m. Last tour of the day during April and May is typically at 1 p.m.

The history of Scotts Hill, Pender County, North Carolina is reflected in this historic site. History is always moving, and continues to shape how we move forward as an historic site.

Black history is American history. The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission (GGCHCC), of which Poplar Grove is a part, recognizes that “Historic sites carry potent literal and symbolic messages across generations. We (GGCHCC) encourage you to visit them this summer and ask yourself important questions about the history they share and the stories that are left out.”

What stories will Poplar Grove carry forward? Part of Poplar Grove’s mission is to initiate meaningful dialogue that builds upon the values of respect, empathy, cultural diversity, multiple perspectives, and democratic principles, and it is our desire to shine light on the generations of enslaved peoples at Scotts Hill whose legacies are especially relevant today.

We will be restructuring our exhibits and tour texts with information about the history of Poplar Grove and the important role of the Gullah Geechee people in our community. More importantly, we will provide a safe space in which to pause, reflect, listen and learn with the exact purpose of viewing American history through the lens of a collective and shared experience, of our collective humanity – locally, nationally, globally, spiritually.

Located in southeastern North Carolina and within the National Park Service’s Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, Poplar Grove historic house and museum, formerly a sweet potato and peanut plantation, produced peanuts from the agricultural skills of the Gullah Geechee people. The sweet potatoes and peanuts were sold locally to planter families to supplement the diet of the enslaved community. The highly protein-packed food source crossed racial lines during the Civil War to feed both Union and Confederate troops, and in the last decade of the 19th century, Wilmington peanuts were shipped as far north as New York City before P.T. Barnum’s traveling circus would popularize this Gullah crop to the masses.

The museum complex is sustained through the continuing efforts of Poplar Grove Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit Public Charity, dedicated to education, conservation, and preservation. The current manor house was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1980 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 15+ remaining acres left of the original homestead are under the stewardship of the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust.

Poplar Grove Foundation, Inc. seeks to shed light on this pre-Revolutionary War planter family who originally settled in New Bern, NC, from Baltimore, Maryland circa 1760. Foy family members and those people this family enslaved played an integral part in eastern North Carolina’s agricultural development and actively participated in North Carolina’s Revolutionary War. The land, and its original manor house, mill pond, brick kiln, and out buildings, was purchased in 1795 by James Foy, Jr. of New Bern, NC, from the estate of Cornelius Harnett, a leading Revolutionary North Carolinian politician.

After the original homestead burned circa 1849, Joseph Mumford Foy, the grandson of James Foy, Jr., chose to construct his new home closer to the Old New Bern Road, which would later become the Wilmington and Topsail Sound Plank Road. The current manor house was built circa 1850, constructed and maintained by the skills of enslaved men and women within the Foy family as well as from enslaved male artisans of neighboring planter families, such as Nicholas Nixon of Porters Neck, David Ward Simmons of New Bern, NC, and the Doziers of Brittons Neck, SC.
